I know when I retire, I’m going to hang onto the family home as long as possible before I move into a retirement home.
But I also know that as I age, some tasks will become difficult. Tasks that I don’t want to burden my children with.
Because I’ve seen it.
I’ve seen children start to resent their parents because they’ve lost their independence and refuse to hire help.
It’s not a good situation for anyone.
If you find yourself in this situation or have a parent that could use some extra assistance, here are 11 ways to offload household tasks.
If you lost your spouse and they did all the lawn care, it can be daunting to pick up this task late in life. Rather, hand this off to a lawn care service.
They will do everything from mowing, fertilizer, aeration, weed control, mosquito control and sprinkler blowouts in the fall.
It’s a one stop shop for the best yard on the block.
House cleaners are a dime a dozen in Regina. You can decide if you want someone to come weekly, bi-weekly or monthly and you can choose if they just do surfaces, bathrooms, or the full meal deal.
House cleaning is money well spent.
Yes, you can take laundry off your weekly list. For less than $2.50/lb, you can have your laundry picked up, washed, folded, and delivered back to you.
So as long as you don’t mind someone checking out your Fruit of the Loom’s, then laundry service might be for you..
Cooking isn’t the hard part for some. It’s the thinking of recipes, planning your grocery shopping and walking around the grocery store that takes all the time.
Why not skip all this hassle and have your meals delivered? You can pre-select meals online that you know you’ll love and they’ll be delivered to your door with a bow on top.
No cooking, cleaning, planning or shopping.
Time and money saved.
Apart from buses, taxis, and Uber, there are some local Regina driving services that can help individuals get to their appointments, go shopping, or meet up with friends.
Deb’s Helping Hands and Driven with Care are two services that come to mind.
Right up there with lawn care, snow removal is just as important. As we age, chucking snow on top of the snow we already chucked can be a heart attack waiting to happen.
Or a sore back, or a broken bone from slipping on the ice.
Snow removal is no joke if you have an aging parent and should be offloaded sooner than later.
Need a little more assistance due to health issues? Then check out home care services like Nurse Next Door. You can have Registered Nurses visit to help with medication, physical therapy or illness monitoring.
Or you can have a caregiver come assist with personal hygiene, groceries, meal preparation, light housekeeping, and transportation.
This one is super budget friendly. For less than $300 you can get the exterior of your windows shined up without having to climb a ladder and risk falling.
There are lots of local services like www.theboysnextdoor.ca and www.thewindowkeeper.ca
A pet can be an excellent companion. Some pets need to run faster than you so why not keep that puppy in shape with a dog walker?
Dog walks cost anywhere from $15 to $20 per walk. I bet there’s a friendly neighbor of yours who would be happy to take the job.
Instacart is a convenient service to get your groceries delivered to your door. You can choose your items and have them delivered all in the same day.
As I was creating this list, I was thinking you can save a lot of time and money by downsizing into a condo. Sure you have maintenance fees but you won’t have to shovel, cut grass, or clean eaves.
Find the right condo and you might even take driving off your list if they have a shuttle. Plus, if you travel lots, condos are more worry free than houses.
We don’t always age gracefully but we definitely hang onto our independence as long as possible. One way to do that is to offload some must-do tasks to local services so that you can enjoy your home longer. Especially if you’ve lost your life partner who used to do these tasks or if you’re relying on your children a little too much.
Over the past 10+ years, we've worked closely with clients showing them how to grow their wealth, pay less taxes and how to create predictable passive income in the stock market.
